Best Diet Around 2014

If I had to put a number on it, I would estimate that over 50% of people say 1) lose weight 2) eat healthier or 3) better fitness is their top New Year resolution each year.  Anyone fall into that category? I do.  I've dubbed 2014 my "fittest year ever!" As we're still hot on the heels of swearing off sweets and upping our quinoa intake, U.S. News and World Reports released the Best Diets 2014, featuring rankings and information on 32 diet plans.

Three new diets were included on the list for 2014 -- the Acid-Alkaline Diet, the Spark Solution Diet and the Fast Diet - as well as extensive profiles of two popular diets for digestive health - the Gluten-Free Diet and the Low FODMAP Diet.

Angela Haupt, health & wellness editor for U.S. News said "Best Diets 2014 is designed to help consumers identify a diet that suits their specific needs, whether they are trying to lose weight, control a chronic disease or achieve a healthier lifestyle overall.  We assembled top experts and developed the tools and rankings to provide a resource for the thousands of Americans struggling to maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle."

The diets were ranked in 8 categories, which included diabetes and heart disease prevention and control, as well as easiness to follow and likelihood of weight loss.  The panel of health experts, including nutritionists and physicians specializing in diabetes, heart health and weight loss, scored each diet for short- and long-term weight loss, ease of compliance, safety and nutrition.  The DASH diet topped the list, with the Paleo diet and Dukan diet bringing up the rear, as a tie, at the bottom of the list.  Personally, I'm happy to see diets such as the Mediterranean Diet and Flexitarian ranking as some of the best -- both of which rely heavily on vegetables, high grains, fruits, legumes and nuts for nutritional intake and drastically reduce saturated fats, red meat and foods high in refined and added sugar.
