Halloween Scares

There are two types of people -- those who love Halloween and get dressed up to celebrate and then there are people who are more like me, those who merely tolerate the day.  Don't get me wrong -- I love seeing the children dressed up and excited and have had so much fun with my niece and nephew over the years.  I DO love the horror movies, the haunted houses and spooky myths that go along with the day.  Ok, so maybe I like it more than I thought... and, of course, the candy is a delicious treat!

But, I wanted to touch on something a bit more serious. This week was a really exciting one -- Doug asked me to be his wife, and I couldn't be more excited to start the next chapter of our lives together.  We heard from friends, family and loved one, through phone calls, texts and cards and we are so grateful for the love and support.  It was a wonderful week to catch up.  But while catching up with once of my dearest and closest friends, she informed me that her husband recently discovered he had cancer. "WHAT?" I screamed into the phone. I was in shock.

They are both healthy, active and vibrant.  They don't smoke, don't drink to excess and take care of themselves. Fortunately, they caught it early and he will be treated, but it was such a scare and, as always with cancer, there are side effects of treatment, fear of the unknown and no guarantees.

On the last day of Breast Cancer awareness month, I urge all women to get their annual mammogram. Please.  There are many things that we can't control in life, but early detection is one of the things that we can do to take charge of our health.  It's hard to ask for help, or know where to turn, but Saint Agnes has you covered.  They've created this website with facts, figures, and a helpful video addressing all of the FAQ that you or a loved one may have.  It's never too late - or too early - to start taking care of your health.

In partnership with Saint Agnes, and in an effort to encourage ALL women to take charge of their health, we're giving away a Vitamix. If you've been a reader of Genuine Joy for awhile now, you know that I can't live without mine.
