It’s funny to think back on what my taste buds were like a mere few years ago. Things I once turned my nose up at are now on my long list of favorites. But my recent attitude about life has simply been to at least try everything once. If I don’t like it, then I never have to have it again. If I love it (so has been the case as of recent) then I can add a new staple or treat to my arsenal.
Below are a couple of the cocktails I’m enjoying now for summer. They’re all in the “acquired taste” category but are certainly making their rounds in my sipping rotation. Try one today, or something else on the drink menu you haven’t tried before, and let me know what you think. It’s never too late to say yes!
I grew up watching my dad drink this beautiful bright orange cocktail all summer long. Campari is an Italian liqueur with a bittersweet taste that is actually fairly low in alcohol, meaning it’s easy to sip on especially in hot summer months. In Italy, it’s actually sold in bottles with soda water - the perfect cocktail on the go!
I finally decided to try it a few Sundays ago on the rooftop bar at Eataly’s Birreria. With the sun shining, it was the perfect time to order this Italian aperitif. It’s definitely intense at first, but combined with a cheese plate and a long, leisurely afternoon spent in good company, it was instantly a new favorite.
Dark ‘n Stormy
Rum always makes me think of frilly, amateur drinks (rum and coke, piña colada), but dark rum, the main ingredient in a Dark n’ Story, has a mature, charred flavor thanks to oak barrel aging. Finally, after much convincing, I tried a Dark n’ Stormy at a rum bar in Baltimore. It was made with Gosling’s Rum and ginger beer to create a rich drink that is perfect over ice with a squeeze of lime.
And on a recent trip to Beacon, NY in the Hudson Valley, I treated myself to a Dark n’ Stormy made with a local dark beer, Gosling’s Rum, nutmeg, and homemade ginger syrup at The Hop. It was refreshing and sophisticated, a summer staple that I’m hooked on!
Your turn. What's on your list of food/drinks to try?
